A truly ‘Heckuva job’ as Palm Beach Community College transforms to Palm Beach State College

January 13th · 1 Comment · Education

In 1933, Palm Beach Junior College became Florida’s first public community college. Through the 20th century, as Palm Beach Community College, the school proved one of the best educational institutions in the state, if not the nation. That legacy now advances with a new name. It reflects the Legislature’s authorization of four-year degrees at Florida’s two-year colleges. In a ceremony crammed with students, faculty and citizens this afternoon at the main Lake Worth campus’ multimedia boardroom, Palm Beach State College officially launched its new moniker.

A report by my former Palm Beach Post colleague Kevin Thompson is here. Below are more scenes:

Board of Trustees Chairwoman Wendy S. Link, the school's Panther mascot and President Dennis Gallon arrive for the packed-house ceremony.

The crowd...

...filled the aisles...

...lined the walls...

...and watched via simulcast...

...at PBCC's — er, PBSC's — Belle Glade, Boca Raton and Palm Beach Gardens campuses...

...as Chairwoman Link, President Gallon, board members, staff and students...

...unveiled the new school seal...

...school logo, and slogan ("Your Pathway to Success").
